Designing Impactful Experiences Through Diverse Perspectives

Building more intuitive and accessible experiences that work better all the time for Sysco’s customers and colleagues starts with understanding that no two people, businesses, or interactions are exactly alike.

At Sysco LABS, our User Experience and Research teams design within a distinct ecosystem of digital experiences, physical operations, and collaborative relationships. From ecommerce and mobile to our sales and delivery teams, customers orders and invoices, and a wide ranging array of products, each interaction is another integral aspect of creating one connected Sysco experience.

That complexity is what makes thoughtful, collaborative design so important.

“Design has a responsibility to synthesize those perspectives and protect the integrity of the experience. We’re deliberate about what we include, but equally critical about what we don’t.”

Sysco LABS Director of User Experience & Research, Anna Hofmanova, recently had the chance to speak with Built In about how different perspectives help her team design stronger experiences — and create an environment where people can do their best thinking.

For Anna and team, that starts with looking beyond individual screens and features. Our designers consider how the whole journey connects across Sysco’s platforms, channels, brands, and people. All the while, UX Research, Product, Engineering and business stakeholders deliver their own unique and expect perspectives on the opportunities and challenges being tackled.

“For me, belonging on a design team is less about everyone feeling the same and more about creating an environment where people can do their best thinking. “

These principles shapes our teams org-wide. Different experiences, strengths, and perspectives are valued because those differences improve our work and build better platforms, systems, and experiences for our customers.

Direct feedback, respectful discussion, constructive criticism, and a willingness to change direction when insights changes create an environment where we can learn from one another while charting the path ahead.

“The strongest teams aren’t ones where everyone thinks alike. They’re ones where people trust each other enough to disagree, learn from one another, and still move forward together.”
